Four partners of the BioAgora consortium - Alternet, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), the University of Trento and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UK CEH) - have come together for the upcoming online event “Biodiversity Conservation in the Age of AI”. The webinar will take place on 18 May 2026 (15:00-16:30 CET) and marks the first event in the relaunched and reimagined Alternet Seminar Series. Beyond the aforementioned co-organisers, the University of Córdoba’s GESBIO research group and the University of Bologna’s Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM), both Alternet members, are also contributing to the proceedings.
At its core, the webinar will tackle the question of how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of biodiversity conservation, from large-scale ecological monitoring to emerging challenges stemming from AI-generated content. To that end, three presentations will be in the spotlight:
-
”Threats to conservation from AI-generated wildlife images and videos” - José Guerrero and Tamara Murillo (GESBIO)
-
“How can AI enable large-scale monitoring of biodiversity?” - Benjamin Cretois (NINA)
-
“AIHab: Developing a habitat recognition tool for ground-based photography” - Lisa Norton (UK-CEH)
Those are set to be followed by a joint discussion, providing an opportunity for researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and stakeholders from across sectors to express and exchange views.
